It presents an opportunity to reconnect with our musicians and audiences all over the world, and this renewal was at the front of my mind when composing this optimistic and forward-moving concert opener. Every section of the ensemble has a key role here, but none more so than percussion and Piano who provide momentum and rhythmic drive throughout the work. He was a man who served others at every opportunity. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHe was courageous and bold when it came to the principles of justice and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003efairness. He was able to connect easily with people from all walks of life. He was seemingly without pride or envy.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI sincerely hope the work brings warm memories to the mind of the listener, perhaps of loved ones they have lost and remember fondly. The uneven pulse of the main body of the work represents a feeling of discomfort for the listener and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eperformer alike, but the repetitive nature of the pulse becomes more comfortable and familiar as the piece \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eprogresses. All of these recalled images, and many more, bring about a feeling of fond reminiscence whenever I take the time to sit still and quietly contemplate parts of my life's journey so far. I have been abundantly blessed to live a life that has been full of love and music, joy and sadness, success and failure, work and play. I wanted to write this piece with a view to taking the listener, and the musicians, on their own journey of nostalgic memories from their past. Some time passes and the tiny stream has become a small river with flowing currents and rivulets joining in to swell the now accelerating flow. There then comes a point where the river has grown to quite a size and it succumbs to gravity as it cascades over a precipice forming a magnificent waterfall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e There is a darker and more mysterious quality to the river now as it winds its way through a shaded valley between two mountain peaks. Eventually it opens out onto a vast, expansive floodplain where momentum and the force of the moving water is so spread out that it seems to be almost still water, and yet it still has life and will inexorably move towards the coast to empty into our great oceans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs is often the case in the natural realm, however, great rivers also have a threatening part of their story. Sometimes there is so much water added to the river through enormous downpours and tropical storms that it becomes an unstoppable force. The flood is full of power, might and anger. There is a majesty to a flooding river, which sits uncomfortably with the destruction being caused as it rends asunder everything it touches. Finally, the flood subsides and the immense amount of water lying on the land in the aftermath gives new life to that which it tried to destroy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe great rivers are the bringers of life for humanity, the animal kingdom and the trees and grasses which rely on them to exist.
