---------------------------

faultlines is a work that is unstable, unpredictable and destructive.

New Zealand lies on a series of significant faultlines that have caused catastrophic natural disasters: earthquakes that have reshaped the land, destroyed homes and taken lives, volcanic eruptions that have also significantly altered the land.

Throughout the piece, the ensemble is constantly in tension with itself; rhythmically, melodically and harmonically in ways that transform and grow as the piece goes through a series unstable moments.

Between these outbursts, there are moments of beauty, even grandeur, in acknowledgement that sometimes beauty can come from places of brokenness –in the midst of significant change and altering to the land and people, there is new life and hope amongst uncertainty.

At the core of this piece is an allusion to a waiata; a Māori song in response to the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886 near Rotorua, New Zealand.

Tērā te auahi ka patua i Tarawera kai raro iti iho

(Yonder is the plume of smoke that struck at Tarawera)
