Darlington Fanfare explores the depth and colour of the wind orchestra through variations on the opening four-note motif. The melody weaves around each section of the band, highlighting the contrasting voice of each instrument including the majestic horns, reedy clarinets and saxes, pompous brass, stately percussion, and strident flutes and oboes.
Written for the Sydney University Wind Orchestra, Darlington Fanfare was a celebration of the partnership between the ensemble and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The piece is named after the Old Darlington School, where the ensemble was first established, and had its premiere performance at Verbrugghen Hall in 2015 (under the imaginative title, “Fanfare”) - Daniel Dinh
