John Grainger (Percy Grainger’s father) was, from 1897, the Principal Architect of the Public Works division of Western Australia. He was responsible for many buildings that remain in use today, including the Government House Ballroom, and the impressive Court building in Coogardie.
Amongst his designs are two town halls - those of Kalgoorlie and Fremantle.
These impressive old buildings still host concerts today - and possibly hosted Percy Grainger when he was in WA just after the turn of the twentieth century. This work evokes the echoes of Grainger in these beautiful, majestic, imposing and occasionally daunting halls - the “Old Town Halls” of Western Australia.
