A keen amateur artist throughout her life, the composer has maintained an interest in the history and application of colour in visual arts and design. Using the light/colour spectrum as a scaffold, the composer chose 6 tubes of paint from her oil paint box, with more unusual names and back-stories as the basis of this suite of 6 short movements as a unique major work for novice wind ensemble and percussion. Reflecting the thick, viscous quality of oil paint this suite explores accessible extended harmonic texture without the technical, rhythmical and range demands of higher-graded works. An interesting addition to any novice, small, or unevenly instrumented ensemble's repertoire, this quasi-flex composition can be performed as individual movements (colours) or as a whole suite (major work), and the movements may also be performed in any order. Featuring different instruments with the melody, each movement has also been created with a range of challenges and learning points to grow novice players in different ways, and more accomplished ensembles can enjoy the more nuanced aspects in this work to really bring the colours to life. - Kara Williams
