Program Notes
Written in 2022 for one of my novice bands that had varying degrees of instrumentation from rehearsal to rehearsal, this flexibly scored and catchy rock-style piece was a hit with my students as they developed counting and coordination skills in a fun way - creating the beat themselves with stomping and clapping. As well as referring to Rhythm, the play on the word Rhumble (rumble) also nods to the colloquial use of the word as a chaotic fight. Watching the students change from clapping and stomping to playing and back again is certainly that! (and is also very entertaining for the audience!) Written with a fairly predictable spread of abilities there are a few notes and rhythms that will stretch players without daunting them.
NB - Trombone players can perform the B naturals at their discretion - knowing it’s quite a stretch for some! - KW
