Program Notes
This suite for young band will provide audiences with a joyous journey through the life of a young kitten. Composer Fran Griffin has masterfully constructed each of the four movements to reflect a chapter in the story of our intrepid kitten as they explore the world and learn from their mistakes.
Suitable for young bands or community groups with less-experienced musicians, this work will enthrall and entertain as the work is prepared for performance. Lots of learning opportunities exist here, and the super-cute storyline gives a solid context to the stylistic requirements of each movement.
It is inspired by the poem "A Kitten's Dventure" by Linda Johnston.

A Kitten’s Adventure
By Linda Johnston
With amber eyes fixed open wide on where she wants to be.
Her soft grey paws with needle claws grip snuggly to the tree.
She climbs a bit but then she slips and so she tries once more.
Feeling brave she hikes a little higher than before.
Her courage grows so up she goes ‘til branches splay below.
Then hovering over a neighbour’s yard she takes it nice and slow.
A bend, a crack, an outright snap, she’s tumbling to the ground.
But landing on her padded paws, she barely makes a sound.
Garden paths and stone bird baths, there’s plenty to discover.
But unfamiliar sounds and sights make her run for cover.
And when her tiny tummy growls she starts to think of home.
So meowing softly, whiskers forward, the kitten starts to roam.
The metal fence a mountain, it’s impossible to scale.
Desperately the little kitten emanates a wail.
Soon enough her human brings her home to eat and nap.
Rejoicing in her homely smells, she’s purring on his lap.
