'It Casts Its Eye Upon Us Gently' is a reverent melody inspired by the bell chime tune, 'All Through This Hour', played at the Elizabeth Tower in the Palace of Westminster, home of the Big Ben bell.
The piece begins with an energetic tutti, evoking the broad sweeping peals of the hourly chime with the well-known tune ringing out in the tubular bells, before simmering down to slowly building melody.
Accompanying figures are built on rearrangements of the four notes that comprise the chime, which pass through different sections of the band.
