Description

Duration 3:05 min

"The Highlands is a Concert Band piece composed to celebrate the 50th year anniversary of Craigslea State High School. As an alumnus, and previous member of Craigslea’s Symphonic Winds, I found myself inspired to write a piece that I would have liked to play in the band, while honouring the school's history.

The Highlands is an uplifting work that embraces the school's Scottish heritage and is inspired by the beautiful mountains and grand landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. Music elements used throughout are reminiscent of folk music, which is used to create a musical journey through the Scottish terrain. These familiar folk sounds invite the listeners in to create connections between the music and landscapes of The Highlands." - Zane Lai

About the Composer

Zane Lai is an Australian bassoonist who is currently studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. While studying a Music Performance degree on the Bassoon, Zane still heavily engages in composition on the side. Through his study, Zane has had opportunities to play with QSO, Queensland Ballet and in various chamber settings.

Through orchestras, operas and wind symphonies, he utilises his broad experience as inspiration for his compositions. Zane began composing when he was 14 in the 2020 pandemic, using music as a creative outlet. Through this, he continued to compose consistently as his passion and talent for music evolved. Eventually, music composition and bassoon playing shaped his desire to seek a future in the arts.
