Live World Premiere Performance 3 July 2022 Castle Hill RSL North West Wind Ensemble conducted by Mr James Brice, OAM
I acknowledge that the land on which I compose and perform music is on land of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. I pay my respects to them and all first nations people, past, present and emerging.
Music can trigger emotional responses and the experience of creating and sharing that with others is something I believe is truly fulfilling. Beyond the Lucent Portal is a musical exploration of how people might come to terms with pronounced loss, with this work being a personal response to recent deaths in my family.
In being unable to share my musical journey with family members, I was inspired by the tragic events in my personal life to channel my emotions into art. In doing so, I found a new desire to reach out to family and friends, and be more present to those I meet.
The sections of this composition navigate a story through love, loss, grief and acceptance - all aspects that are worth celebrating in life. From writing the work, I learned that the most temporary of things might be the most meaningful, and so to appreciate beauty in the simple things we can take for granted. Loss is permanent and the adjustments that follow can be difficult, so for the people who have lost someone close to them, I hope you find comfort, reflection and a sense of remembrance in Beyond the Lucent Portal.
The evolution of Beyond the Lucent Portal was made possible in significant part by the generous mentorship of James Brice OAM, David Kimpton and the contributions of the Castle Hill RSL North West Wind Ensemble. The time invested by these people into workshops, rehearsals and the finalisation of the work is immensely appreciated and elevated the composition for its premiere under the baton of James Brice OAM.
