This work was written in an attempt to capture in sounds some of the moods, imagery and energy contained in the superb piece of prose my brother Nathan wrote using "fridge magnet words" some years ago. His way with words has always captivated me and the minute I read these words, I knew I would one day compose a work for them. The trick to a great performance of the work will be in understanding the changing and temporary nature of all things, and to successfully portray this in the way the music is performed.
I only hope that my work has paid appropriate homage to the incredibly emotive and imaginative words so skillfully constructed by my brother, Nathan.
To Nathan, thanks for being my big brother. I love and respect you and I am constantly in awe of your way with language. I hope you enjoy the piece.
I may chant and whisper a thousand dreams in sleep:
delicate visions, bare moments,
recalling the stillness after an iron black storm
under a white hot summer sky, smooth as blue diamond;
falling through wet forest mist like cool sea spray,
delirious and drunk on the sweet smell of spring rain;
soaring to the languid beat of elaborate language
and sad music.
These pictures are over fast, gone in to the void -
but their shadows are here yet, beneath my skin
like a purple smear of beauty:
this gift of never and always.
