Named after the state bird emblem of Western Australia, Black Swan Overture is a musical journey to one of the country’s most unique and wondrous states. The piece begins with a flight towards the state capital of Perth, indicated by two starting notes from the flutes and glockenspiel (D and B) to mimic sound alert that plays when the seatbelt sign lights turn on. The Lydian mode being a key feature of this piece not only reinforces the sense of soaring above the clouds, but to also evokes wonder and adventure for the entirety of piece.
Following the graceful intro begins the adventurous part of the overture. The sweeping Lydian melody lines and rhythmic percussion work depict the state’s wonderful attractions and mesmerising landscapes. These include the stunning rocky gorges of Kalbarri National Park, the shifting dunes of The Pinnacles Desert and the charming home of the adorable quokkas, Rottnest Island just to name a few.
Afterwards, the piece slowly transitions into a serene, lyrical section depicting the crystal-blue waters from the state’s vibrant coastal towns. Here the listener can experience the relaxing sounds of waves crashing onto shore paired with the refreshing afternoon sea breeze. The music gradually transitions from lyrical to majestic, where it eventually returns to its adventurous nature to further emphasise the state’s abundance of beautiful sceneries and attractions. All of this culminates to a bold and triumphant conclusion to signify the end of a successful journey through the unique and wondrous state that is Western Australia. - B.L.
