From Symphony #1 "H2O".
Nowhere on our planet is water of more importance than in the desert. Here, life lies dormant, waiting for the new beginning and the spectacular re-emergence of flora and fauna very soon after it finally rains. It can be years between rains in deserts around the world, and the seemingly miraculous explosion of new life that occurs is indeed a wonder to behold. Our warming climate has led to longer periods between rains and higher temperatures in our deserts, and without action from the global community, we may reach a point where the rains will not come even often enough to sustain life where life is best adapted to wait.
I wanted to portray a sense of heat, dryness, waiting, lying dormant, and desperately hoping for the rains to come in the first half of this movement. It is intentionally uncomfortable and takes us into an almost alien world of the struggle for life to exist. After waiting for what seems like an eternity, the second half signifies the explosion of life and new beginnings that invariably occurs. I hope you enjoy the sense of emergence, relief and joy as our desert awakens.
