As a drummer, I find the sound of a ticking clock to be somewhat comforting, like a gentle metronome, the groove is subtle yet unwavering. Maintaining a shared precise rhythmic feel in any ensemble can be difficult, especially for string groups who obviously play arco the majority of the time.
After talking with various orchestra directors about this challenge I decided to write this work, hoping it to be a fun and challenging piece for orchestras of all ages, but also an educational tool helping improve rhythmic cohesion in your ensemble.
There are a number of tempos and rhythmic groupings to negotiate, but 99% of the piece is made up of crotchets and quavers. Encourage your musicians to stay mindful of the time, listening to how their part fits within the overall groove, and to continue counting and subdividing, especially during rests. This piece can be performed with violins and violas in either the traditional or "guitar" position. No Stick, Tick Tock offers a unique experience for your ensemble and will be enjoyed by musicians and audiences alike. - Gavin Kerr
